About

Manifesto

Cosa vuol dire elaborare automaticamente l'informazione?

What does automatical processing of information means? What is information? These are questions about which some among the most eminent scientist of the 20-th century (Hilbert, Gödel, Church, Turing, Shannon, Schrödinger, Watson, Crick, Feynman, McCarthy, ...) did more or less directly work in order to give us an answer with revolutionary consequences: a big part of the reality surrounding us may be efficiently described through combinations of symbols (information), reworkable (processing) through rules whose only premise is the ability to distinguish symbols one another (which can be expressed by saying that information is represented through digital encoding).

Informatics is the discipline born from such efforts. “Doing” informatics required to build electronic machineries able to deal with hundreds of billions of symbols in small space, in a few time, using little energy. Electromagnetic communications enable the fast and reliable transmission of symbols and processing results. And quantum-based techniques are now nearby to further improve such devices.

Mastering informatics methods and techniques is necessary in order to understand how all this is changing our way to interact with the world, to realize the difference between buying a book rather than its symbolic description, to exploit the advantages originating from the possibility to have available descriptions of our behaviour, our communications, or in order to evaluate the possible harmful effects on our freedom of action and thought.

ALaDDIn was born for that, to show through activities accessible to anybody how much creativity, how many opportunities and risks there are in the automatic processing of information, to convince that it is worth understanding “what lies beneath that” even who did confuse up to now this nearly pervasive (although still revolutaionry) conception of the world with the use of the devices that make it possible. Borrowing the words of Edsger Dijkstra we want to seduce you to informatics, as well as, if we were astronomers, we would like to fascinate you with the study of stars, rather than with that of telescopes.
